Metadata is found in the Official Gazettes and Gazette Supplements for a country or region.

It is preferable to use Official Gazettes as the source for legislation, Have a look at for access to Laws.Africa's collection of gazettes.

In cases where gazettes are inaccessible, alternative official sources can be used, but only if they maintain the integrity and authenticity of the legislation. This ensures that any legal references are accurate and based on primary, verified sources.

Official documents that are not Gazettes may come from:

  1. Attorney-General’s Office, a government department, Parliament, etc.

  2. Government printers' reprints, attachments/supplements to gazettes.

  3. The cover page/title/running header of a document will tell you what the source is. If there is no such information on a document, we shouldn’t use it.
